Don’t Get a Bad Case of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)!

Learning about health is different from actually being actively healthy. Don’t miss out on life!
Since I started paying more attention to health-related news and information, I find I’m spending more time than I’d like online, going through emails and Facebook postings (though I rarely post anything myself). I’m mostly retired now, so I have the time. But instead of reading a good book, going out with friends or doing stuff I didn’t have time for before, I’m sitting in front of a monitor or poking away at an iPad.
I’ve got a bad case of FOMO — Fear of Missing Out.
Given that the internet and all-news-all-the-time media pump out untold hours and terabytes of information, FOMO can be quite stressful. And stress, we’re told, is not always healthy.
What comes to mind is “Everything in moderation,” just like eating and drinking. The truth is, though, I’m not very disciplined when it comes to eating or exercising. I’ve been on all kinds of diets (Liquid, Phen-Phen, Weight Watchers) and exercise programs (including cardiac rehab after an angioplasty). I lost weight, got fitter, stopped and drifted back to eating what I like… ignoring the treadmill, bike, and weights in the basement.
When I consider how I spend my time now – looking for and taking in information for Fear Of Missing Out, I’d be better off putting the monitor to sleep and my iPad away and taking a good long walk.
